Volvo Car Open

When a good buddy hit me up looking for some help with a commercial, I of course said yes. But when the brief came in, I realized we had a huge endeavor in front of us: four-weeks to remotely co-direct a 30s commercial: writing, storyboarding, shooting, 3D, compositing, and sound.

So, we dug in. The awesome team at Obviouslee and a dream client made the process easy and enjoyable, and this spot speaks to what is possible when a creative team jives well together. We collaborated to push last year’s creative forward and turn out a 30s spot to capture the heart of the Volvo Car Open.

To build up hype for this year’s tournament and speak to tennis fans, the creative was predicated on celebrating clutch tournament moments from prior years; those big moments made indelible through surreal athleticism. The stadium served as our canvas and we used light and projections as metaphors to display flashes of those moments. The tone was to be intense, compelling and driving, bringing gravity to all that these women have achieved over the years.

A solid soundtrack serves as the foundation for this spot and we were psyched to have the voice talents of Debi Mae West give the character and confidence this spot required. And then Jason Sexton pulled all of the sound together into a solid mix that gave this spot dimension and depth.

Please note this version is the Director’s cut.
